SUMMARY:4th Annual Mountain Monarch Festival  at Gorges State Park
DESCRIPTION:Offering something for all ages\, the 4th Annual Mountain Monarch Festival will be from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.\, Saturday\, Oct. 3rd \, at Gorges State Park\, Sapphire\, NC. This free event\, hosted by the park and sponsored by Friends of Gorges State Park and other partners\, will celebrate the monarch butterfly during its migration and bring attention to the species’ declining numbers. \nThe festival offers educational programs and exhibits as well as fun for the whole family\, including children’s crafts\, face painting by Macon Faces Face Painting\, a butterfly hike and a Monarch Migration Passport to lead through the activities. The featured speakers will be Joyce Pearsall\, Conservation Specialist\, Monarch Watch and a Master Gardener\, who will speak about “The World of Monarch Butterflies” and Heyward Douglas\, an entomologist who has worked as a park naturalist and served on the Foothills Trail Conservancy’s board of directors since 1989\, who will talk about visiting the wintering area for the Monarchs in Mexico. \nA variety of activities and programs will be offered along with food trucks from Simpell Sammies\, Grand Olde Station\, and Sugar and Snow Gelato. Friends of Gorges State Park are the sponsors for the Mountain Monarch Festival in partnership with Gorges State Park\, Transylvania Tourism Development Authority and Monarch Watch. Exhibitors at the event include: N.C. Cooperative Extension Service\, N.C. Department of Commerce\, N.C. State Parks\, Conserving Carolina\, The Land of the Sky Chapter and the Oconee Bell chapters of the Native Plant Society\, Jocassee Wild\, Transylvania County Bird Club and\, Friends of Panthertown. Transylvania County Library will be onsite along with local art and native plants for sale. DESCRIPTION:Ben Bjorlie grew up in a household where the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra wasn’t just background music—it was the family business. His mother played cello\, his father played bass\, and by the time Ben hit fifth grade\, he was starting on clarinet\, eventually landing spots in the National Honors Band and every all-state ensemble that would have him. Then at 13\, he picked up his dad’s bass and started learning Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller tunes by ear\, which is the musical equivalent of learning to drive on a Formula One racetrack.\nSomewhere between high school marching band drum line and his undergraduate percussion degree at Appalachian State\, Bjorlie developed a dangerous superpower: complete fluency on both bass and drums\, which means he understands rhythm from both sides of the conversation—he’s the guy who knows what the bass player needs from the drummer and what the drummer needs from the bass player\, because he’s spent decades being both people.\nSince moving to Asheville in 1998\, Bjorlie has become one of those musicians’ other musicians call when they need someone who can play literally anything—funk\, bebop\, Latin\, swing\, big band\, salsa—with the kind of taste and sensitivity that comes from actually listening instead of just executing. For over a decade\, he’s been the house bassist at Asheville Music Hall’s Tuesday funk jam and the house drummer at Barley’s Thursday jazz jam\, which is code for “he’s logged more stage hours than most people log sleep hours.”\nHe’s played with the Asheville Horns\, Bayou Diesel\, Orange Krush\, Nuevo Montuno Salsa Orchestra\, David Zoll Trio\, Asheville Jazz Orchestra\, Spork!\, and countless other projects that needed someone who could read the room\, read the chart\, and make everyone else sound better. And when he’s not performing\, he’s teaching the next generation at Asheville Music School—because apparently being proficient on bass\, drums\, AND guitar while maintaining dual careers as an educator and working musician isn’t enough of a challenge.

DESCRIPTION:Flat Rock\, N.C. – The Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness will offer a “Blessing of the Animals” on Sunday\, October 4\, at 4:00 p.m. in the new outdoor Wilderness Chapel located behind the Parish Hall at 1905 Greenville Highway in Flat Rock. \nPets and furry or feathered companions are invited to this special annual service to receive a blessing. Cats\, dogs\, snakes\, chickens\, horses\, birds\, goats\, in fact all domestic animals\, are welcome! As an option\, a stuffed animal or pet photo may be presented to receive a blessing. Our outdoor gathering space will create a lively atmosphere for all creatures involved. \n“The Blessing of the Animals is a special worship service that playfully restores us to be the creatures that we were made to be\,” said the Reverend Joshua P. Stephens\, Rector of St. John in the Wilderness. We pause each year at this time to offer thanks and blessings for our animal companions who love us so very well. In so doing\, we discover solidarity with them before God who gives all of creation life and sustenance. What a joy it is to be given life and friendship with each other and our pets! We will thank God for all of it on October 4th.” \nThe service occurs the same day as the annual Feast of St. Francis of Assisi\, a man with a true spirit of love and peace that could have only come from God. He turned the cerebral\, inward-leaning theology and scholasticism of the Middle Ages on its head by his radical commitment to living a life of poverty and service in the pattern of Jesus of Nazareth. \nThose who encountered St. Francis were drawn into the peaceable Kingdom of God to know\nmore fully the Prince of Peace. Even animals\, it is said\, were attracted to his Christ-like\ngentleness. In one story\, he preaches to a flock of birds.
