  • This section of the French Broad River is surrounded by trees and farmland, and is a great place to see wildlife.
  • Nearby river put-ins are at Penrose (10 miles upstream) and Horse Shoe Bend River Access Park (6.5 miles downstream)

Founders Austin and Andrea Bankert, have a passion for hospitality and cultivating community with a hands-on approach to managing Cognative and investing in the local community. Council on Aging Thrift Store in Etowah donates all proceeds to benefit the Council on Aging for Henderson County. The store offers a range of items, including books, shoes, clothes, furniture, and more, with every purchase supporting local seniors in need.

Ecusta Trail

The Ecusta Trail (opening Summer 2025) will connect Downtown Hendersonville to Downtown Brevard. Following what used to be freight train route, this flat greenway only sees about 300 feet of elevation gain along its entire 19 miles! Pretty impressive for being in the mountains of Western NC! The Ecusta Trail, which is the longest Greenway in Western NC, is being built in phases, and phase 1, which goes from South Main Street in Hendersonville all the way to Horse Shoe and very nearly to the French Broad River, is expected to be open to the public in or before December 2024.

Be sure to follow the Ecusta Trail Rules and Etiquette:

  1. Stay on the trail and respect private property.
  2. The trail is open at all times, except for dangerous weather events or repairs.
  3. Pedal-assist e-bikes are permitted.
  4. Speed Limit 15 mph unless posted otherwise. Wheels yield to pedestrians.
  5. Keep right except to pass. Give audible warning before passing.
  6. Stay alert/Listen for approaching traffic; Decrease the volume of audio devices and keep one ear open.
  7. Trail users should only park in designated areas.
  8. Helmets are recommended for everyone on wheels but required for anyone 16 years of age and under.
  9. Bicycle light-use is required from dusk to dawn (both front and rear lights are recommended).
  10. No devices shall be left on the trail unattended, unless parked in appropriate parking places.
  11. Do not block the trail. Pull off the trail when stopped.
  12. Pets must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet and under control. Clean up after your pet.
  13. Call 911 to report any emergency or suspicious activity.
  14. Please report any vandalism, storm damage, or unsafe conditions immediately to Henderson County Parks and Recreation Department by calling 828-697-4884.

  1. Littering and vandalism
  2. Tobacco use of any kind
  3. Possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages or any intoxicants
  4. Killing, trapping, or harming wildlife
  5. Fireworks
  6. Selling, soliciting, or exhibiting materials without a Parks and Recreation Issued Permit
  7. Collection, removal, damage, or disturbance of any trail property, natural or cultural object
  8. Horses
  9. Camping
  10. Prohibited vehicles include, but not limited to: ATVs, UTVs, 4-wheelers, golf carts, and tagged vehicles (including motorcycles, scooters or mopeds)
    Note: Individuals with a mobility disability have the right to use an OPDMD (Other Power-Driven Mobility Device)

 

Etowah Blueberry Patch

Sun up to sun down everyday during harvest season, typically June through August, it is recommended to call or check their Facebook page before going!

  • Vendors sell fresh produce, meats, sweets, breads, arts and much more.

Etowah Park

Etowah Park’s facilities include a shelter, picnic tables, a playground, a newly repaved walking trail, tennis courts, 4 lighted ball fields, concession stand, batting cages, playground, basketball court, a soccer field, a shuffleboard court, a little library, and a Frisbee golf course. The picnic shelter has two 7 foot tables, six 5 foot tables, electrical outlets and a water spout.

Horse Shoe Bend River Access

  • This park offers access to the French Broad River with a floating pier. 
  • This section of the river is a slow-moving, sometimes shallow section of the river that is more ideal for kayaks, canoes and stand up paddleboards.
  • This section of the French Broad River is surrounded by trees and farmland, and is a great place to see wildlife.
  • Parking lot has a small picnic area.
  • Nearby river put-ins are at Blantrye Park (6.5 miles upstream), Lazy Otter Outfitters (3.8 miles downstream) and Westfeldt Park (11 miles downstream)

Karolina Kremes

The colorful and pet-friendly Karolina Kremes in Etowah attracts families with a bubble machine, sidewalk chalk and a hopscotch course. There is ample parking, not only for vehicles but areas for bikes and horses. Ice cream lovers choose from 12 flavors, as well as soft-serve vanilla and chocolate. The most popular flavors are Superman (mix of strawberry, banana, and blue fruit) and Cappuccino Crunch. There are 50-plus milkshake options, including the Redheaded Monkey Shake. which combines peanut butter, banana and chocolate ice creams. Food items include hot dogs with homemade chili, angus beef burgers and wraps.

Moonshine Mountain Snow Tubing

Obermiller’s Strawberry Farm

This small, family-owned farm offers U-pick strawberries, blueberries and blackberries, located just a few minutes outside of Downtown Hendersonville. Take a family photo in front of their barn with beautiful barn quilt or their restored, antique 1963 Allis Chalmers tractor.

  • Open first week of May for strawberries
  • Around July 4th for blueberries and blackberries
  • Typically open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday — check their Facebook page for current availability, as with all things farm-related, this is variable and completely based on the fruit

Located in charming Horse Shoe Gap Village, an historic “village” of tiny buildings turned artisan shops, the gallery offers a wide selection of jewelry at reasonable rates and also offers small, individual jewelry making classes, where all materials are included and you are guaranteed to leave the class with a wearable piece of art that you have created!
