The Apple Valley Model Railroad club located at the historic train depot, 650 Maple St. Hendersonville, NC 28792 will again host the reading of the popular book, The Polar Express from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, Dec 20th. Each reading takes about 45 minutes. Admission is free and open to the public. Donations are gladly accepted. The club recommends arriving at about 9:30 to line up on Maple St since this is expected to be a very popular event. Everyone is invited. The local Boy’s and Girl’s Club will provide the readers for this year’s event. Parents must accompany their children at all times.
In addition to the reading of the Polar Express, the club will provide free hot chocolate and have the Polar Express train running on the HO gauge indoor layout. Both the indoor HO gauge and the outdoor G gauge layouts depicting railroading in Western North Carolina will be open to all visitors. Club members will be running trains and providing insights to the history of railroading in Western North Carolina while demonstrating model railroad operations. The depot is handicap accessible. This will be a great family get together just before Christmas. Everyone is encouraged to attend. The Sandburg family enjoyed a simple holiday at home at Connemara. They handmade gifts and baked Swedish springerle cookies, gathered holly and greenery from the grounds to decorate mantels and tables, and cut a white pine from the woods as the Christmas tree. Favorite tree ornaments were glass or paper mache birds. The Christmas season was a time when the family was home and Carl Sandburg took a break from traveling. They gathered in the living room to listen to music, sing songs, and read stories.

This December, we are bringing the holiday spirit straight to you at the Henderson County Library with our Playhouse Jr. Christmas Rock Out Tour: a high-energy, heartwarming performance created for adults and kids alike!
Our troupe of talented 3rd–12th grade performers will be traveling to the Henderson County Library to share a festive mix of Christmas songs, poems, and scenes. The performance will run 25–35 minutes.
The show is full of energy, music, and holiday cheer—perfect for audiences of all ages.

On weekdays from December 1 through 19, Historic Johnson Farm will host daytime Christmas tours.
Guided tours are at 10:30 AM each day. While drop-ins are allowed, those with reservations take priority, so please consider making a reservation. Guided daytime tours are $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors (65 and over), and free for those 4 and under. Groups of 10 or more can schedule a private guided tour on any weekday at 1 PM.
For those that do not want to take a guided tour, on Fridays December 5, 12, 19, the farm house will be open for self-guided tours from 1-3 PM. Reservations are not needed for self-guided tours, and tickets cost $5 for all.
Candlelight Christmas tours will be held on Saturday, December 13. Four tours will be offered that evening, at 5:00, 5:45, 6:30, and 7:15 PM. Visitors will take part in a guided tour of the decorated 1880 farm house, visit with the Heritage Weavers and Fiber Artists, listen to live music by local students, and partake in hot cocoa and cookies.
Reservations and advance payment are required for the Candlelight Christmas tours as space is limited. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for students and seniors (65 and over), and free for 4 and under. Children are more than welcome, but please know the tour is about an hour of listening to guides talk about farm history before ending with hot chocolate and cookies.

Truman Capote’s beloved short story, A Christmas Memory, will once again be performed as a one-man show by actor and theologian E.R. Haire, Jr. at The Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness. Four shows are set beginning on Friday, December 16th at 7:30pm. The rest of the schedule includes Saturday, December 17th at 7:30pm, Sunday, December 18th at 2:30pm and 7:30pm. The performances will be held in the Wilderness Room of the Parish House, across Rutledge Drive from the church building at 1895 Greenville Highway in Flat Rock. This is the 20th year Dr. Haire has performed the story from Los Angeles to Edinburgh, Scotland with many stops in between.

His best-known works include Breakfast at Tiffany’s, In Cold Blood, Other Voices Other Rooms, and The Grass Harp. Mr. Capote died in 1984 at the age of 59
Earle Ross (E.R.) Haire, Jr. PhD is a native of North Carolina. His professional achievements combine acting and theology. In Los Angeles, he worked as an actor and at Paramount Studios. Theater credits in Los Angeles include The Foreigner, You Can’t Take It With You, Hamlet, Henry V, Richard III, The Importance of Being Earnest, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, and the comedy spoof Riffs of Shakespeare. Dr. Haire is also a member of the Screen Actors Guild.
Dr. Haire earned a Master of Sacred Theology degree from Yale University Divinity School, focusing on drama and worship. In 2017 he earned a PhD. In Theology and Ethics from the University of the Edinburgh in Scotland.

Truman Capote’s beloved short story, A Christmas Memory, will once again be performed as a one-man show by actor and theologian E.R. Haire, Jr. at The Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness. Four shows are set beginning on Friday, December 16th at 7:30pm. The rest of the schedule includes Saturday, December 17th at 7:30pm, Sunday, December 18th at 2:30pm and 7:30pm. The performances will be held in the Wilderness Room of the Parish House, across Rutledge Drive from the church building at 1895 Greenville Highway in Flat Rock. This is the 20th year Dr. Haire has performed the story from Los Angeles to Edinburgh, Scotland with many stops in between.
The show is free to the public but seating is limited to 50 people per performance and RSVP is required. Sign up at www.stjohnflatrock.org. Face masks are optional.
A Christmas Memory takes place during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Until he was ten years old, Truman Capote lived with elderly relatives in a small town in rural Alabama. The story is a frankly autobiographical account of those years, especially of his relationship with one of the elderly cousins, Miss Sook Faulk.
The greatest examples of Capote’s skillfulness as a writer are found among the stories inspired by his early childhood and the relationships he forged growing up in the rural South.
A Christmas Memory first appeared in Mademoiselle Magazine in the late 1950s, when Capote was 27 years old, and has since become one of his most beloved and bestselling works.
Mr. Capote was a flamboyant figure in both literary and cultural circles. Controversial, colorful and complex, he was a writer of uncommon grace. His best-known works include Breakfast at Tiffany’s, In Cold Blood, Other Voices Other Rooms, and The Grass Harp. Mr. Capote died in 1984 at the age of 59
Earle Ross (E.R.) Haire, Jr. PhD is a native of North Carolina. His professional achievements combine acting and theology. In Los Angeles, he worked as an actor and at Paramount Studios. Theater credits in Los Angeles include The Foreigner, You Can’t Take It With You, Hamlet, Henry V, Richard III, The Importance of Being Earnest, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, and the comedy spoof Riffs of Shakespeare. Dr. Haire is also a member of the Screen Actors Guild.
Dr. Haire earned a Master of Sacred Theology degree from Yale University Divinity School, focusing on drama and worship. In 2017 he earned a PhD. In Theology and Ethics from the University of the Edinburgh in Scotland.

Bullington Gardens, a public garden and horticultural education center, holds its 17th annual Holiday Craft and Greenery Sale both online and in-person.
On December 3 and 4, shop in-person at the Bullington Gardens Holiday Sale. Greenery, locally-grown holiday plants including cyclamen, amaryllis and poinsettia, as well as limited ornaments and crafts will be sold. Wreaths and swags enhanced with botanicals gathered on the Bullington Garden grounds and created by volunteers are ready for your home.
The online store will also be open November 15 – December 17, with nature-themed, handcrafted items including ornaments, textiles, quilts, botanical beauty products and holiday décor. The evergreen holiday gnome, standing 36 inches tall, adds a whimsical touch to your front porch. Online orders for holiday greenery will be accepted through Tuesday, November 23. The Holiday Greenery Sale features premium, freshly-cut Fraser fir trees ranging in height from five to eight feet. These native trees come from the Western North Carolina mountains and are wrapped for protection during transport.
