The first steam engine puffed up the Saluda Grade to the Hendersonville Depot in 1879. The steam engine needed a “help engine” attached to the rear of the train at Melrose for additional power to push the train up the Saluda Mountain Grade, the steepest mainline standard gauge railroad in the United States. The Carolina Special ran between Charleston, South Carolina and Cincinnati, Ohio from 1911 until 1968. The restored Depot houses a HO scale railroad layout that is highly detailed and is prototypical of Hendersonville, Saluda, Asheville, and Western North Carolina. The Deport features historical artifacts, a Southern Railway caboose and a special children’s exhibit where visitors can operate a Thomas the Tank train in a scenic layout. The Aquarium & Shark Lab by Team ECCO is the only public aquarium in Western North Carolina. It is recognized as the first inland aquarium in North Carolina. The Aquarium houses 20+ displays of tropical fish, eels, stingrays, sea horses, turtles, a touch tank, a 2,000-gallon shark study tank with bamboo sharks and more.

Art on 7th is Henderson County’s only exclusively contemporary art gallery. Bearfootin’ Public Art Walk is a whimsical, playful public art display, with the much-loved Bearfootin’ bears of Downtown Hendersonville. For this ‘Bear Hunt,’ follow the map to locate each of the decorated bears along the sidewalks of Main Street from May – October, when they are auctioned off. Each year, a new set of bears line the street.
The Bearfootin’ program is supported by area businesses and individuals, and part of the proceeds of each bear benefits an area non-profit organization. The Ecusta Trail (opening Summer 2025) will connect Downtown Hendersonville to Downtown Brevard. Following what used to be freight train route, this flat greenway only sees about 300 feet of elevation gain along its entire 19 miles! Pretty impressive for being in the mountains of Western NC! The Ecusta Trail, which is the longest Greenway in Western NC, is being built in phases, and phase 1, which goes from South Main Street in Hendersonville all the way to Horse Shoe and very nearly to the French Broad River, is expected to be open to the public in or before December 2024.

Named for Mayor Albert V. Edwards, originally opened in 1933 as a center for activities of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. The existing scout huts will remain at the site. A new bicycle corral in partnership with the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club is planned along with the new park amenities. A new ADA-accessible miniature golf course named for Laura E. Corn is also on the Edwards Park site. A concession stand and public restrooms are located at the playground as well. Local artists and organizations are collaborating to blend old features from the Boyd Park site as well as creating new art features.

Since 1924, Henderson County Curb Market is a unique farmers market requiring sellers to be residents of Henderson County. All items sold at the market must be either hand-made or locally grown. The vendors offer a variety of goods such as: crafts, baked goods, jellies, plants, flowers, toys, and produce.
Henderson County Genealogical & Historical Society has an extensive library on history and genealogy of North and South Carolina and surrounding states. Holdings include Henderson County deeds, estate records, early newspapers, early court minutes, maps, church and school histories, photographs, Bible records and family histories. Volunteers are available to assist researchers.
Henderson County Heritage Museum is housed in the Historic Henderson County Courthouse on Main Street. It offers public displays, artifacts, lectures, collections, archives, libraries, demonstrations, and other exhibitions relating to the history, culture and heritage of Henderson County. The museum celebrates veterans of all wars, and has an Civil War Display.

Long-time vendors of baked goodies at many of Hendersonville’s Farmers Markets, the Fields family finally “set down roots” with their own bakery in the 7th Avenue Historic District of Hendersonville in 2022. At this permanent location, you can purchase a huge selection of tasty baked goods, including cookies, muffins, pinwheels, breads, cakes, mini pies, raspberry preserves, raspberry vinegar and even raspberry sonkers (if you know, you know)! In the heart of downtown Hendersonville, the expanding Oklawaha Brewing is a craft beer lover’s destination. This nano-brewery and taproom specializes in hop-forward IPAs, crisp lagers, and locally fruited sours, constantly innovating to bring a new and exciting beer experience. Beyond beer, Oklawaha Brewing regularly offers live music, trivia nights and much more. Home to the Sunflower Kitchen, a café run by the Hendersonville Co-op that offers a variety of made-to-order burgers, sandwiches, bowls and more.
The Oklawaha Greenway stretches 3.25 miles, connecting Jackson Park, Patton Park, Berkeley Park, Sullivan Park & William H. King Memorial Park. It is a relatively flat paved trail and is handicap accessible. The Greenway is a 10-foot-wide asphalt path for cyclists and pedestrians. Mileage signs have been installed every quarter of a mile along the trail to help trail users know how far they have traveled and how much farther it is to their destination. Benches, water fountains, and three bicycle FixIt Stations are available along the trail. Blue light phones have been installed along the greenway using grant money from the state Department of Transportation.
The Hendersonville Family YMCA now operates the Patton Pool located in Patton Park. Patton Park is the City’s most active park with athletic courts, playing fields, skate park, outdoor pool, walking trails and greenway access. Pavilions for rent. Public restrooms, open seasonally. Pet’s Own Place is a dog park managed by the City of Hendersonville that offers 2 fenced in areas where large and small dogs are permitted to play off-leash. There is also a waste bag dispenser, trash receptacle and a water spigot.

Hendersonville’s sweetFrog Premium Frozen Yogurt is located on Main Street. Folks choose from 21 flavors daily. There are 14 individual flavors and seven “twists” that combine two flavors such as peanut butter and pomegranate raspberry for a PB&J twist. A half dozen core flavors are available year-round: original tart, strawberry, chocolate, no-sugar-added vanilla, cake batter, and cookies and crème. The latter is a sweetFrog original made in-house with vanilla frozen yogurt and Oreos.
There is always at least one no-sugar-added flavor, gluten-free options, dairy-free sorbets and regular ice cream. Frozen yogurt varies from ice cream by being lower in fat. A topping bar contains 40-plus options.

This 100-year-old building is now North Carolina’s first Brandy bar! With renovations in 2016, the effort was to keep the building as original, both inside and outside, as when it was constructed in 1915 giving it lots of character. Come check out this historic building and enjoy a glass of Brandy!
