Flat Rock
Where History and Culture Collide
The Village of Flat Rock is one of the oldest and most historic parts of Henderson County. Named after the great flat rock where the Cherokee who once called the area home would meet, Flat Rock was settled in the early 1800s, predominantly by wealthy Charlestonians looking for a respite from the summer heat and disease that was rampant in the low country at the time. The area is home to the popular Park at Flat Rock, which has one of the most popular playgrounds in the region; the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site and a herd of award winning goats; The Flat Rock Playhouse, state theatre of North Carolina; St John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church, the oldest church in the area; and Little Rainbow Row, a small downtown shopping area designed to resemble Charleston.
